Sir Walter Cope built the Jacobean mansion Cope Castle here, later renamed Holland House, and incendiary bombing devastated it in 1940. The London County Council kept the ruins as a backdrop for open-air theatre. Kyoto's Chamber of Commerce donated the Kyoto Garden in 1991.
