Alfred Waterhouse designed the Romanesque building, which took from 1873 to 1880 to build and opened in 1881. Hope, a 25-metre blue whale skeleton from a whale stranded in Ireland in 1891, hangs in Hintze Hall where the Dippy cast stood until 2017.
