Gareth and Clare Reid started with a Sunday pop-up at Wood Street Indoor Market in 2013. Tom Haigh from Climpson's cycled to their flat to teach them the second-hand eBay espresso machine on their first trading day. They moved to Orford Road in 2014, then to Blackhorse Workshop that autumn.
Roasting began in April 2018 through slot sessions at Tate Britain, before a 5kg Probat arrived in a shipping container on-site in early 2019. Head roaster Tim came from Modern Standard, Caravan, and Caravela green coffee sales. The roastery relocated to Essex in 2020. The Blackhorse Workshop café passed to the workshop itself in 2022.
