Harold Higgins left the Kenya Coffee Company in 1942 and started roasting on a hand-driven 7lb machine with his daughter Audrey, in a top-floor room on South Molton Street. The first shop opened on the same street in 1944, and the beans are now roasted on a 25kg Probat at Waltham Abbey.
At the Duke Street shop, antique brass canisters line a wood counter beneath a Royal Warrant crest. A staircase leads down to a black-panelled café with a row of V60 drippers on the bar.
