Three central London coffee houses named for the 1600s Penny Universities.

A penny bought a cup of coffee in those first English coffee shops, and the group kept the idea in its name. The first opened on Great Queen Street in Covent Garden in 2015, and Sloane Square and South Bank followed.

All three serve breakfast, all-day brunch, lunch and cocktails alongside specialty coffee.

At this shop

The shop's glass frontage opens onto the paved courtyard of Duke of York Square, where most of the seating sits in rows of tables under branded parasols. Inside, a diamond-patterned mosaic wall runs behind the bar and along a leather banquette, facing a mural of an illustrated barista above the kitchen hatch.
