Founded in 1856 with the Chandos portrait of Shakespeare as its first acquisition, it has occupied Ewan Christian's building at St Martin's Place since 1896. A £41 million rebuild ended in June 2023, adding bronze doors carrying 45 portraits of women by Tracey Emin.
