Kiwi James Phillips, who had worked as a banker and as a Sydney barista, opened with eight seats and moved next door in 2010 for more room. Square Mile's Red Brick is the house espresso, and Dose was among the first London cafes to use fully compostable cups.
The shop is a single narrow room behind a full-width glazed front, where a red streak of ceiling, machine and counter edge runs through the dark, chalkboard-covered walls. Stools line a bar-height counter on the pavement outside the window.
