Pira and Hutan began in 2016 by selling green beans to artisan roasters in nine European countries, then opened a cafe on Lavender Hill in 2017. Their Ugandan coffee comes from the Bukonzo Organic Farmers Cooperative in Kyarumba, where nearly 5,000 farmers, 85% of them women, won the SCAA Sustainability Award in 2015 for gender equality.
The founders visited Uganda for each main harvest over three years. Guatemala, Mexico, and Colombia supply the rest.
