Mat Appleton, formerly of Soho House, and artist Jess Blackstone opened the first café in her old studio on Mountgrove Road in 2014, running it as a café by day and a restaurant by night. Cafés now stand in Highbury, Finsbury Park, Clapton and Clissold Park, with coffee from Scenery Coffee Roasters.

Adam Morley is Head of Bread at the Blackstock Road bakery. Saltine, their restaurant on Highbury Park, serves an evening menu by Phil Wood, formerly of St John Marylebone.

Inside Clissold House, a Grade II*-listed Georgian mansion in Clissold Park, the café spreads across several rooms: a terracotta-pink room with a curved blue counter, a mustard-yellow room beside it, and a dark-green former drawing room with an open fireplace and a sash window onto the park.
